Transfer Equivalency and Schedule Planning Resources

In order to plan a competitive schedule for transfer admission, you should follow the Admissions Transfer Roadmap for your intended program.

To assist you with further credit transferability forecasting, several databases are available on the Registrar's Transfer Guide which contain all course equivalencies from colleges and universities previously evaluated by the University Registrar. If no or only limited data exist for your institution, you should use the Undergraduate Catalog Course Descriptions resource to view Virginia Tech course descriptions by departmental abbreviation and number. For the best chance of receiving equivalency credit, you should use these descriptions to locate and pursue courses of a similar name and content at your current institution.

Transfer Credit

Official final transcripts from all colleges previously attended will be evaluated for transfer credit by the Office of the University Registrar. In most cases this occurs after the admissions process has concluded and during new student on-boarding. Questions relating to transfer credit should be directed via email to transfercredit@bagmakerblog.com. The university allows transfer credit for college-level courses completed at an accredited college with a grade of "C" or higher, provided the courses are consistent with the course requirements of the curriculum in which the student enrolls at Virginia Tech. Note: All AP and IB credit awarded from other institutions will be awarded by Virginia Tech based on our own policies (see below). No more than 50% of degree requirements may be transferred in from two-year colleges or community colleges. No more than 75% of degree requirements may be transferred in from other four-year colleges or universities. A student must receive credit for at least 90 semester hours to be classified as a senior. The senior year, with a minimum of 27 of the last 45 semester hours, must be completed at Virginia Tech.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Students who merit advanced placement may obtain up to 38 hours of credit through AP examinations. The university awards 3 or more credits in most subject areas for scores of 3 or above. Credits allowed for advanced placement will be shown as transfer hours on the student's academic transcript and are included as hours passed toward a degree. Virginia Tech does not grant advanced standing for in-service training (e.g., military).

Visit the Registrar's Transfer Guide for a detailed listing of AP credit award practices and contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions with any admissions-related questions. Final determination of credit will be made after the test results have been evaluated by the university. Please have your scores sent (electronically or physically) from the College Board to:

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Advanced standing credits are granted for higher-level IB subjects with scores of 4 or higher (5 on mathematics). Students who earn the IB diploma may receive credit for one course for which the student examined at the subsidiary level. The maximum number of credits awarded for subsidiary level courses is 3 semester credits (4 with lab). Up to 38 semester credit hours may be granted for those earning the IB diploma and up to 30 semester credit hours for those without the diploma. Credits granted for IB courses are shown as advanced standing credits and are included in the hours completed toward a degree on the student's Virginia Tech academic transcript.

Visit the Registrar's Transfer Guide for a detailed listing of IB credit award practices and contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions with any admissions-related questions. Final determination of credit will be made after the test results have been evaluated by the university. Please have the IB transcript sent (electronically or physically) directly from the International Baccalaureate Headquarters in New York to:
